Italy international started as a No 9 in the club’s pre-season friendly against Preston North End and impressed
Federico Chiesa could stay at Liverpool beyond this summer despite the winger’s subdued first season at Anfield.
The Italy international is being considered for a positional switch as the club assess their attacking options ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.
Chiesa arrived from Juventus last year for €12m and struggled to make an impact under Arne Slot. He made just 14 appearances across all competitions, with most of them substitute appearances.
The player has suffered from injuries in addition to poor form and has been linked with an exit this summer. However, Liverpool’s shortage of options in their forward line could open the door for Chiesa to play a more central role.
He started as a No 9 in last weekend’s pre-season friendly against Preston North End and was impressive. That came days before Fabrizio Romano announced that his proposed move back to Italy was off.
Darwin Nunez’s future is equally uncertain after three underwhelming years at Anfield, and Liverpool would be much more eager to sell the Uruguay international as they could recoup some of the £85m they spent on him for reinvestment into the squad.
This is particularly the case after the club formally expressed interest in signing either one of two expensive strikers this summer in Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike.
The club would be eager to pay for any deal by raising money from a player sale, having already spent upwards £200m this summer.
