Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca admits to delivering an angry half-time team talk as his side came from behind to beat Lincoln City 2-1 in the Carabao Cup third round.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed that he delivered an angry half-time team talk during their 2-1 win over Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup third round.
The Blues trailed at the break but scored two goals in two minutes in the second half through Tyrique George and Facundo Buonanotte to seal the win.
Maresca confirmed that he spoke angrily to his team at half-time, saying “Absolutely, absolutely,” when asked about the tone of his team talk. However, he refused to elaborate on just how angry he got, leaving fans to wonder what exactly was said in the dressing room.
The Chelsea boss highlighted the importance of experience in games like these, noting that some of his players, such as Jamie Gittens and Jorrel Hato, had never played against League One teams before.
“This kind of game, you have to play in a different way,” Maresca said. “It’s more about desire, and we struggled in the first half.”
Despite the struggles, Maresca believes that the win will be valuable experience for his young players. “If the next game in the Carabao Cup is again against a team from League One or League Two team away, for sure tonight’s experience will be good for the next one,” he said.
The win marked a much-needed victory for Chelsea, who had failed to win any of their previous three matches, including defeats to Bayern Munich and Manchester United. Maresca’s team talk clearly had an impact, as the Blues came out stronger in the second half and secured the win.
Chelsea now turn their attention to Brighton who ran rampant in their own Carabao Cup fixture, winning 6-0 against Barnsley. Chelsea will be looking to pick themselves up from the defeat to Manchester United and get back to winning ways.
