Chelsea are set to recall Aaron Anselmino from his Borussia Dortmund loan as they assess centre-back options ahead of the transfer deadline.
Chelsea have decided to recall Aaron Anselmino from his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, bringing the young defender back to Stamford Bridge midway through the season.
The Argentine centre-back enjoyed a strong first half of the campaign in Germany, impressing with his composure and physical presence, which has prompted Chelsea to act as they assess their defensive options.
With the transfer window approaching its February 2 deadline, the Blues are closely monitoring the centre-back market and remain open to strengthening that area if the right opportunity arises.
Recalling Anselmino is understood to be Chelsea’s first concrete move as they begin shaping their plans for the remainder of the window. No final decisions have yet been made on the overall structure of Chelsea’s defence before the deadline, and the club still retains the option to recall Mamadou Sarr from his loan spell at sister club Strasbourg if required.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old England youth international Josh Acheampong is expected to remain part of the first-team setup beyond the window, despite attracting interest elsewhere.
This also adds new drama to the transfer plans for Rennes defender Jacquet. Chelsea had agreed a deal for him but with Anselmino coming back from his loan and Rennes refusing to sell this January transfer window, Chelsea are expected to wait till the summer or back out completely.
