Chelsea is set to revisit talks with AC Milan over signing goalkeeper Mike Maignan in January, following Robert Sanchez’s red card against Manchester United.
Chelsea’s interest in signing Mike Maignan has been rekindled after Robert Sanchez’s red card in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United.
The Blues had previously approached AC Milan about signing the France international in the summer but were deterred by Milan’s high asking price. However, with Sanchez’s blunder against Manchester United and the goalkeeping situation at the club, Chelsea is considering Maignan as a potential replacement.
Maignan’s contract situation makes him an attractive target for Chelsea. His deal at AC Milan expires at the end of the season, and Chelsea can approach him on a pre-contract agreement in January. Alternatively, a knockdown fee could be agreed with Milan, who are likely to be eager to secure a sale rather than lose Maignan for free in 2026.
Chelsea’s manager Enzo Maresca is reportedly a fan of Maignan’s style and believes he would be a good fit for the team’s system. Maignan’s experience and quality would undoubtedly strengthen Chelsea’s goalkeeping department, which has been a concern this season. Sanchez’s five errors leading to goals in the 2024/25 campaign have raised doubts about his reliability.
The red card against Manchester United seems to be the final straw for Chelsea, who are now seriously considering Maignan as an upgrade. With his impressive skills and experience, Maignan could provide the stability and consistency that Chelsea’s goalkeeping department lacks.
