Chelsea have continued the pursuit of Adam Wharton despite reporting a record £262m financial loss.

Chelsea remain keen on signing Adam Wharton as they assess midfield reinforcements ahead of the summer transfer window. The Crystal Palace midfielder has emerged as one of the club’s preferred options following his impressive development in the Premier League.

Chelsea’s interest comes amid uncertainty surrounding Enzo Fernández, who continues to be linked with a potential move to Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are believed to admire Wharton as well, although they would prioritize a move for Fernández if they decide to strengthen their midfield.

Even so, Chelsea’s pursuit of Wharton is not viewed as purely reactive. The club have been tracking several midfield profiles throughout the season, and Wharton’s composure, passing range, and Premier League experience have made him an appealing long-term target.

The London side are continuing its recruitment plans despite recently reporting a record £262 million loss for the 2024/25 financial year. The figure surpasses the previous Premier League record set by Manchester City, who posted losses of £197.5 million in 2011.

Club officials remain confident they are operating within financial regulations, but the scale of the deficit could influence how aggressively they pursue high-value transfers. That consideration may play a role in any potential move for Wharton, particularly given his growing valuation.

Chelsea will also face strong competition for the midfielder’s signature. Manchester United are eager to strengthen their midfield and have identified Wharton as a key target, while they have also been linked with players such as Carlos Baleba, Sandro Tonali, João Gomes and Elliot Anderson.

Manchester City and Real Madrid are also monitoring Wharton’s progress, while Crystal Palace are under no immediate pressure to sell. With a contract running until 2029 and a valuation reportedly around £100 million, which is influenced by Declan Rice’s move from West Ham United to Arsenal,  the England hopeful is set to be at the centre of a major transfer battle.
