Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen has refused to join Strasbourg on loan, opting to stay with Chelsea and compete for a starting spot.
Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen has refused to join Strasbourg on loan, despite being considered for the move. The 23-year-old Danish goalkeeper, who joined Chelsea from Villarreal last summer for £20.7m, looks set to remain at Stamford Bridge and fight for his place with existing options.
Jörgensen was a potential candidate to replace Djordje Petrovic at Strasbourg after his loan spell ended. However, the goalkeeper has chosen not to join the Ligue 1 club, opting to stay with Chelsea instead. This decision means Jörgensen will likely compete with Robert Sanchez for a starting spot in Chelsea’s goal.
As a result of Jörgensen’s refusal, Chelsea is expected to loan another goalkeeper to Strasbourg.
Mike Penders, a 19-year-old goalkeeper, is set to join the Ligue 1 club on loan after fulfilling his role with Chelsea at the FIFA Club World Cup. Penders’ loan move to Strasbourg seems imminent, with negotiations reportedly going well between the two clubs.
Jörgensen’s decision to stay with Chelsea gives him the opportunity to prove himself as a top-tier goalkeeper. Although he mainly played in cup competitions last season, he did displace Sanchez for a few Premier League games. With 24 appearances in all competitions last season, Jörgensen has shown glimpses of his potential.
