Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo has returned to training 72 hours before the Club World Cup final, giving the Blues a major boost ahead of the showpiece clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo has returned to training with the squad, giving the Blues a major boost ahead of the Club World Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain.
Caicedo went down injured towards the end of Tuesday’s semi-final victory over Fluminense and received treatment on the pitch before hobbling off. The Ecuador international appeared to hurt his ankle and was unable to continue, leaving manager Enzo Maresca sweating over his fitness heading into Sunday’s final.
However, Caicedo now appears to be fit enough to play this weekend, after posting a message on Instagram that read: “See you on Sunday, Blues”.
He was also seen in training with the squad, which suggests that he may be fit ahead of Sunday’s match. Maresca had previously expressed concern over Caicedo’s fitness, but the midfielder’s return to training will be a welcome relief for the Chelsea boss.
The Blues had to finish the game with 10 men after Caicedo’s injury, as they had used all of their allotted substitutions by that time. However, the team managed to secure a 2-0 win over Fluminense, setting up a showpiece clash with Paris Saint-Germain at MetLife Stadium. Caicedo’s potential return will be a significant boost for Chelsea, as he is a key player in the team’s midfield.
Meanwhile, fellow midfielder Romeo Lavia hasn’t featured for the Blues since their 4-1 win over Benfica in the round of 16. His absence has been notable, and it remains to be seen whether he will be fit to play in the final. Noni Madueke, on the other hand, trained with the squad despite being linked with a £50 million move to Arsenal.
Maresca had spoken about Caicedo’s injury, saying that the midfielder had twisted his ankle and felt pain. However, Caicedo had assured him that he would try to be fit for Sunday’s match. With Caicedo now back in training, it seems likely that he will start against Paris Saint-Germain.
