Chelsea Co-owner Faces Criticism Over Europa League Tickets

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is facing intense backlash from fans after tickets for the upcoming Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur were listed at exorbitant prices on Vivid Seats, a ticket resale platform in which Boehly holds a significant stake through Eldridge Industries.

Premium seats for the May 21 final at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao have been spotted for as much as £22,738, sparking outrage among supporters.

The Chelsea Supporters’ Trust (CST) has been vocal in its criticism, labelling Boehly’s involvement with Vivid Seats as a “clear conflict of interest.” In an open letter to Premier League chief executive Richard Masters, the CST emphasized that Boehly’s dual role undermines efforts by Chelsea FC, the Premier League, and law enforcement to combat ticket touting.

The Trust highlighted that Vivid Seats is explicitly named by the Premier League as an unauthorised ticket website.

This controversy adds to the growing discontent among Chelsea fans regarding Boehly’s stewardship. Earlier this year, supporters staged protests outside Stamford Bridge, expressing frustration over the club’s direction and Boehly’s perceived detachment from its traditions. Chants of “We want our Chelsea back” and banners criticizing the ownership underscored the fans’ dissatisfaction.

Despite the mounting criticism, Boehly has downplayed the unrest, referring to it as “par for the course” in football ownership. He has yet to publicly address the specific concerns raised about his association with Vivid Seats.

As Chelsea continues its pursuit of European qualification, the spotlight remains on Boehly’s business interests and their impact on the club’s relationship with its supporters. The CST and other fan groups are urging the Premier League to investigate and take appropriate action to resolve the ongoing conflict.
