Deal makes Garnacho the second United winger to join Chelsea in consecutive seasons
Chelsea have reached an agreement with Manchester United to sign winger Alejandro Garnacho in a deal worth £40m.
The 21-year-old is expected to sign a long-term contract until 2032 and undergo a medical on Friday before completing the move. United have also inserted a 10 per cent sell-on clause in the agreement.
Garnacho, who joined United from Atletico Madrid’s academy in 2020, had been considering his future this summer after falling out of favour under head coach Ruben Amorim. His relationship with the Portuguese manager has been strained since last season’s Europa League final, where he voiced frustration at being used only as a late substitute.
Despite making 58 appearances in all competitions last season and recording 11 goals and 10 assists, Garnacho was told earlier this summer that he should find a new club.
Chelsea, admirers of the Argentina international since January, moved quickly once negotiations opened and were the only club Garnacho was prepared to leave Old Trafford for.
The deal makes Garnacho the second United winger to join Chelsea in consecutive seasons, although this time in a permanent move, following Jadon Sancho’s loan switch last year.
United had previously turned down interest from Napoli in January, but a departure for the 21-year-old was always on the cards given Ruben Amorim’s insistence on a 3-4-3, with Garnacho a poor fit to that system.
