Stakeholders believe move will reduce travel stress and allow fans to enjoy the game better
The next men’s Champions League final will kick off in daylight after Uefa confirmed the fixture will be brought forward three hours.
The change takes effect at the 2026 edition in Budapest’s Puskas Arena on 30 May. The Champions League final has always started around 9 p.m. CEST (8 p.m. BST) but Uefa were unsatisfied that finals stretched close to midnight when extra time and penalties were involved.
There was also little opportunity for fans to celebrate and then find smooth travel back home.
The European football governing body said the new earlier slot will make the event more accessible for supporters, as it allows for easier travel and more family-friendly viewing times.
There will also be a chance for the victorious side to host celebrations after the game.
The decision comes after consultations with Football Supporters Europe (FSE), Uefa’s recognised fan liaison body.
FSE director Ronan Evain welcomed the move, saying it “makes day trips more feasible, reduces travel stress and allows fans to enjoy the occasion without worrying about late-night logistics”.
Broadcasters are also expected to benefit. Uefa noted in a statement that the new schedule will open up better viewing opportunities across the globe.
The governing body said: “The new kickoff time aligns with a more accessible broadcasting window, helping the final reach an even broader television and digital audience worldwide, with a particular focus on engaging younger viewers.”
