Manager admits his side “not at our best” against West Ham

Michael Carrick is “delighted” for striker Benjamin Sesko after he came off the bench again to score another crucial goal for Manchester United.

With Carrick’s Red Devils trailing a goal down to West Ham at the London Stadium on Tuesday night, it was Sesko, coming on for the ineffective Matheus Cunha, who struck late with a delightful finish into the top corner to prevent a first defeat under the interim coach.

It followed his late goal from the bench two weeks ago that handed United a vital win over Fulham.

“Fantastic finish,” Carrick said of the 22-year-old’s strike on Tuesday. “He has done it again. It is important. It is a great finish. Delighted for him. Another big goal and a good step.”

United were out of ideas for much of the game at the London Stadium, struggling to create chances with West Ham happy to concede possession and play in a low block.

“I think we were a little disappointed and we were definitely not at our best,” said Carrick. “It’s times like that when you find a way and move on.

“I’m a little frustrated at that. It is a tough place to come and we didn’t have that sharpness to find the answers. Great spirit again and we will take the point and move on.

“Credit to the boys for coming back again, it is a great trait to have in the team. There are positives to take from it, you can’t win every game, we certainly didn’t want to come away from here without a point.”
