Jamie Carragher has raised concerns about William Saliba’s leadership qualities, suggesting that the French defender’s performances have dipped since Gabriel Magalhães’s injury. The former Liverpool defender believes Saliba needs to step up and become a leader in Arsenal’s backline.
Saliba and Gabriel have formed a formidable partnership at the heart of Arsenal’s defence, playing a crucial role in the team’s recent resurgence. However, Gabriel’s hamstring injury, sustained in a 2-1 win over Fulham on April 1, has sidelined him for the remainder of the season. In Gabriel’s absence, Saliba’s performances have come under scrutiny, with Carragher noting a series of mistakes, including errors against Real Madrid and Crystal Palace.
“I think Saliba is the better player, but Gabriel is the better leader,” Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday. “Saliba needs Gabriel. Since Gabriel has come out of the team, that’s not the same Saliba I’m watching.”
The former Liverpool player added that while Saliba possesses the physical attributes of a top defender, he needs to develop leadership skills to reach the level of players like Virgil van Dijk. “Saliba’s not a kid anymore, but he’s not quite in his prime. As a centre-back, when you know the guy next to you is a leader, when he moves away, you’ve got to become the leader and organise the back four, not just play your own game,” he added.
The absence of Gabriel has exposed vulnerabilities in Arsenal’s defence, with Saliba’s recent performances highlighting the need for him to take on more responsibility. As Arsenal continues to push for success, the development of leadership qualities in players like Saliba will be crucial for the team’s aspirations.
