Pundit blames club hierarchy for appointing manager with system not suited to its traditions

Jamie Carragher has described Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Manchester United as “a disaster” and suggested it is time for the club and manager to part ways.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, the former Liverpool defender said Amorim’s 10 months in charge has failed to show any kind of progress.

The Portuguese coach was appointed from Sporting last November but has failed to secure even successive Premier League wins in nearly a year. In that time he has managed just nine wins from 33 Premier League games, losing 17.

“This has been a disaster for Manchester United but also for Ruben Amorim,” said Carragher.

“What he did at Sporting Lisbon was fantastic, but bringing in a manager like that with the system he plays, I don’t think that ever suited a club like Manchester United with its traditions. We are just waiting for the inevitable, unfortunately.

“It could not have gone any worse and I feel for him. But those results for a club of that stature are just beyond belief.

“You don’t want to see anybody lose their job but I think it would just be better for everyone if they just shake hands and move on.”

Amorim has stuck with his favoured 3-4-3 formation throughout his time at Old Trafford, but the system has drawn serious criticism from supporters and pundits. While it has largely taken the blame for much of United’s struggles so far, Amorim has said he will not change it no matter what, and that he would rather be sacked instead.

Carragher criticised the United hierarchy for bringing in an inflexible manager playing a system not suited to the club’s identity.

“This is on Omar Berrada [CEO] or Jason Wilcox [director of football] or Jim Ratcliffe. They brought him in. They knew that when they brought him in.

“The only positive for Manchester United is that they have not gone all in on his system. The players they have brought in could easily be flipped into a back four.”
