Wilson told Newcastle fans: “It’s time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years”
Callum Wilson has officially left Newcastle United following the expiration of his contract, bringing an end to a five-year spell on Tyneside.
Wilson joined Newcastle from Bournemouth in 2020 for £20m and quickly established himself as the team’s primary forward. He scored on his debut against West Ham and went on to net 49 goals in 130 appearances across all competitions.
But after failing to score in the Premier League last season, and with injury issues limiting his appearances for the club, the former England international has opted for a fresh start away from St James’s Park.
Newcastle confirmed the 33-year-old’s departure in a statement, noting that the decision was made by the player.
“Callum Wilson has confirmed he will depart Newcastle United after five seasons at the club,” the club posted on social media. “From scoring on his debut against West Ham in 2020 to wearing the iconic number 9 shirt, Callum has played a huge part in our success in recent years and we thank him for all his contributions. Good luck for the future, CW9!”
Wilson said: “It’s time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years in the Toon.
“Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.
“I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it. Scoring at the Gallowgate End really is as special as they say.
“All good things come to an end but there’s no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my families hearts. Thank you for the memories.”
Wilson has already attracted interest from newly promoted sides Leeds United and Burnley, both of whom are in the market for experienced Premier League attackers ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.
Capped nine times for England, Wilson was part of Gareth Southgate’s 2022 World Cup squad in Qatar but hasn’t featured since. A move to a club where regular minutes are guaranteed could yet reignite those international ambitions.
