A delegation from the Saudi Public Investment Fund has held talks with the striker to convince him to rejoin the squad

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has admitted the team are “really missing” striker Alexander Isak, after the Swede missed the club’s second Premier League game of the season against Liverpool.

The Magpies lost 3-2 to Liverpool in dramatic Monday night football. In Isak’s absence, Anthony Gordon was preferred up front for the second successive game, with William Osula brought on in the second half.

But the balls Newcastle put into the box that failed to be properly attacked showed just how much they missed their star No 9.

Guimaraes said: “We’re really missing our striker, a player who scored more than 20 goals in the Premier League last season, so of course he’s someone we feel the absence of.”

Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and a delegation from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund were present at St James’ Park as Newcastle put it in a strong performance that also exposed their desperate need for a quality striker up front.

Reports are that the delegation went to meet with Isak during their visit and held talks to address the situation. Ideally, Newcastle’s owners would hope to convince him to change his mind and rejoin the squad.

Guimaraes said: “We hope to have our best player back, but unfortunately this is a situation that neither I nor any other player can control.

“The club, the management, the owners are dealing with it, and I hope it gets sorted out in the best way.”
