Manchester United captain determined to play wherever the coach needs him

Bruno Fernandes has insisted he is comfortable adapting to a deeper midfield role under Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim.

This season there has been intense debate over whether the Portugal international can function in a deeper role after Amorim withdrew him into a double pivot in the embattled 3-4-3 system.

Critics have also said the decision limits the attacking influence of the club’s most potent threat and one of the league’s best creators.

Fernandes said he is happy to play wherever the team needs him.

United’s captain said: “I like playing football. Regardless of the position, I’ll do my best. Everyone has favourite positions. In a place with a lot of quality, you have to adapt.”

The 31-year-old is in fact tied second in the Premier League so far this season for open-play chances created (13), alongside Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo and three behind the Premier League’s player of the month for August, Everton’s Jack Grealish (16).

He has scored two goals for United in seven league games, one of them from the spot and the other in open play against Chelsea.

“I played these positions with [coach] Jorge Jesus at Sporting,” said Fernandes. “When you see from the front, you can find more space. The risk is lower.

“When I play as a No 10, the goal is to create plays, to finish. I adapt to the team game. The most important thing is to win. I want to play my best.”

Fernandes also reiterated his commitment to United and said he is determined to navigate through the rough times.

“I feel good in Manchester,” said Fernandes. “I love the pressure. It means the goal is bigger, and I’m a person who enjoys challenges.”
