Newcastle’s pursuit of Wissa comes as they seek cover in attack while Alexander Isak pushes for a departure

Brentford have turned down an improved Newcastle United bid for Yoane Wissa.

Newcastle’s latest bid was worth £35m plus £5m in add-ons but was dismissed by Brentford, who are under no pressure to sell.

The club would prefer to keep their player but if he is to leave they are understood to want significantly more for the 29-year-old.

Wissa, who scored 19 Premier League goals last season, is keen on the move to St James’ Park. He returned early from Brentford’s pre-season camp in Portugal to discuss his future with senior figures at the club and has not featured in any of their warm-up matches or the 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend.

Nottingham Forest also had bids for Wissa rejected earlier in the summer, following an unsuccessful approach in January.

The DR Congo international joined Brentford from Lorient in 2021 and has scored 49 goals in 149 appearances. His current deal runs until 2026, with the club holding an option for a further year.

Newcastle’s pursuit of Wissa comes as they seek cover in attack, with Alexander Isak pushing for a departure. The Sweden striker posted on social media this week that his relationship with the club “can’t continue”, intensifying speculation over a possible move to Liverpool.

Eddie Howe’s side have already missed out on several forward targets, including Hugo Ekitike, who joined Liverpool, and Benjamin Sesko, who moved to Manchester United.

Brentford, meanwhile, have already lost head coach Thomas Frank to Tottenham, captain Christian Norgaard to Arsenal and Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United this summer, increasing the importance of keeping Wissa unless their valuation is met.
