Borussia Dortmund and Monterrey face off in the Club World Cup round of 16 on Tuesday, July 2, 2025.
Dortmund, led by coach Niko Kovač, are favored to win after topping Group F with 7 points, thanks to wins over Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan HD, following an opening game draw against Fluminense. Despite not delivering a dominant win in the tournament, Dortmund will look to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
Monterrey, under Domènec Torrent, had an impressive run in Group E, finishing second with draws against Inter Milan and River Plate, before a stellar 4-0 win over Urawa Red Diamonds.
This victory not only showcased their talent but also demonstrated Torrent’s tactical adaptability. Despite being the underdogs, Monterrey will look to pull off an upset, with Jorge Rodríguez returning from suspension to anchor the midfield.
Dortmund will need to shore up their defensive system, which has been shaky at times in the tournament. Jobe Bellingham’s versatility and Julian Brandt’s potential return to the lineup could give Dortmund an edge. Anything but advancing to the quarterfinals will be deemed a massive failure for the German giants.
