Bayern Munich’s captain and goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, has been ruled out for the foreseeable future with a muscle fibre tear in his calf.

Bayern Munich have suffered a big blow in the Bundesliga title race as 39-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was injured and had to be withdrawn at half-time during Bayern’s 3-0 Bundesliga win over Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Neuer’s injury was initially downplayed by sporting director Christoph Freund, who described it as “nothing serious”. However, further examinations revealed a muscle fibre tear, confirming the worst fears.

The injury is a significant blow to Bayern Munich, with Neuer being a key figure for the team this season. He has made 27 appearances in all competitions and kept eight clean sheets.

Jonas Urbig will step up as Bayern’s number one goalkeeper while Neuer recovers, starting with the upcoming home fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt

Neuer’s availability for Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund remains in doubt, with reports suggesting a potential three-week recovery period. This could be a significant blow to Bayern’s title hopes. Neuer has struggled with calf issues in the past, missing 10 games last season with a similar injury. His future at Bayern Munich is also uncertain, with his contract set to expire soon.

The veteran goalkeeper’s absence will be deeply felt by Bayern Munich, and Urbig has big shoes to fill as Bayern work to maintain their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table.
