Belgium Edges Wales 4-2 in Thrilling World Cup Qualifier

Kevin De Bruyne on international duty for Belgium

Kevin De Bruyne’s penalty brace helps Belgium defeat Wales 4-2 in a crucial World Cup qualifier, effectively ending Wales’ automatic qualification hopes.

Belgium secured a 4-2 win over Wales in a thrilling World Cup qualifier, with Kevin De Bruyne scoring a brace of penalties. The victory moves Belgium to the top of Group J, while Wales’ chances of automatic qualification have been severely dented.

Wales made a strong start to the match, with Joe Rodon scoring his second international goal in the eighth minute.

However, their momentum was disrupted by a disastrous six-minute spell in which Belgium scored twice. De Bruyne calmly converted a penalty after Ethan Ampadu was judged to have handled the ball, and Thomas Meunier followed up with a fierce strike.

The first half was filled with excitement, with Jordan James forcing Thibaut Courtois into a diving save. Despite Wales’ best efforts, Belgium’s defense held strong, and the home side trailed 2-1 at halftime.

After the break, Wales continued to push for an equalizer. Craig Bellamy introduced Brennan Johnson and Nathan Broadhead in an attempt to turn the game around. However, their efforts were ultimately thwarted when James committed a careless handball, allowing De Bruyne to score his second penalty.

Broadhead did manage to pull one back for Wales, drilling a clinical strike past Courtois. However, Leandro Trossard quickly restored Belgium’s two-goal lead with a composed finish in the 90th minute.

The defeat leaves Wales four points adrift of top spot in Group J, with a tough road ahead in their quest for World Cup qualification. Belgium, on the other hand, will be confident in their chances of securing a spot in the tournament.
