Bayern Munich’s lead at the top of the Bundesliga is reduced to nine points as they are held to a 1-1 draw by Bayer Leverkusen
Bayern Munich’s lead at the top of the Bundesliga has been cut to nine points after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Bayer Leverkusen. The result extends Bayern’s winless run in league meetings at the BayArena to four matches.
Leverkusen took the lead in the sixth minute, with Aleix Garcia scoring after a deflection off Jonathan Tah. Bayern had chances to equalize, but Nicolas Jackson’s efforts were thwarted by Janis Blaswich.
The game took a turn for the worse for Bayern when Jackson was sent off for a late challenge on Martin Terrier. The winger’s dismissal left Bayern with 10 men, and they struggled to create clear chances.
Harry Kane came on as a substitute and had a goal ruled out for handball. Bayern eventually equalized in the 69th minute, with Michael Olise setting up Luis Diaz for the goal.
However, Diaz’s celebration was short-lived, as he received a second yellow card for simulation, leaving Bayern with nine men. The visitors held on for the draw, despite Leverkusen’s late pressure.
The result is a missed opportunity for Leverkusen, who are two points outside of the top four, having played a game more than the two sides above them. They had chances to win the game, with Malik Tillman and Patrik Schick going close.
Bayern’s unbeaten run in Bundesliga away games continues, with 22 matches without defeat. However, their lead at the top of the table has been reduced, and they will need to regroup quickly.
