Bayern Munich were held to a 2-2 draw by Mainz as the Bavarians giants needed a late penalty to earn a point.

Bayern Munich’s three-match winning streak in the Bundesliga came to an end as they were held to a shock 2-2 draw by Mainz at the Allianz Arena. Bayern took the lead just before halftime through Lennart Karl, who scored his third Bundesliga goal of the season.

Mainz then stunned the home crowd with a stoppage-time equalizer, as Kacper Potulski headed in William Boving’s exquisite free-kick delivery. The visitors took the lead again in the second half through Lee Jae-Sung, who scored with a superb header.

Bayern pushed hard for an equalizer, but Mainz’s defense held firm until Harry Kane was fouled in the box, earning a penalty which he converted to salvage a point for the hosts.

The draw means Bayern remain nine points clear of RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga, but they will be disappointed to have dropped points at home.

Mainz, on the other hand, remain bottom of the table, but supporters will be hoping that this point will spark a change of fortune under new head coach Urs Fischer.
