Victor Boniface’s future at Bayer Leverkusen is uncertain and will be decided during the pre-season under new coach Erik ten Hag.
Ten Hag plans to experiment with Boniface playing alongside Patrik Schick in a front two partnership. Despite rarely featuring together under Xabi Alonso, Ten Hag believes this partnership could work.
Boniface was instrumental in Leverkusen’s maiden Bundesliga title win, registering 14 goals and eight assists in 23 appearances. However, since returning from an adductor injury, he and Leverkusen haven’t been the same, with just ten goal contributions last season. This dip in form has led to speculation about his future at the club.
Leverkusen has made it clear that Boniface would be allowed to depart the BayArena, and AC Milan is reportedly still targeting the €50 million marksman. However, Ten Hag’s plan to pair Boniface with Schick could change everything. If they strike up an effective partnership during pre-season, Boniface is expected to stay.
The Nigerian international’s contract extension until 2029, signed in January, complicates matters. Despite a failed move to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, Boniface’s exit seemed likely, especially with Schick set to stay at Leverkusen. However, Ten Hag’s new plan could keep Boniface at the club.
Several top European clubs, including AC Milan, have been monitoring Boniface’s situation. AC Milan’s new manager, Massimiliano Allegri, is reportedly a huge fan of the Nigerian striker. Leverkusen might sell Boniface for around €30-50 million, depending on the offer.
With the transfer window still open, Boniface’s future remains uncertain. If Ten Hag’s plan doesn’t work out, a departure before the end of the transfer window could be an option. Leverkusen is open to offers, and Boniface’s career path will likely be determined in the coming weeks.
