Germany international played only two games on loan at Girona before latest setback

Marc-Andre ter Stegen will have surgery to repair the issue in his hamstring, Girona have announced.

Ter Stegen joined Girona on loan from Barcelona in January and played only two games before sustaining yet another injury.

“Marc-Andre ter Stegen will undergo surgery this Friday for the injury he suffered to the hamstring of his left leg during the match against Real Oviedo,” Girona said in a statement. “The recovery time will be determined after the procedure.”

The goalkeeper is likely to be sidelined for months after the procedure, in what is a big blow for his World Cup hopes.

The Germany international lost a starting spot at Barcelona following a long-term injury sustained at the start of the 2024-25 season. He has been kept out of the team this season by injury problems as well as Barcelona’s signing of Joan Garcia from Espanyol.

Ter Stegen joined Girona on loan in the hope of getting regular football to claim the No 1 shirt in Germany’s 2026 World Cup squad, but the latest setback puts even his place in the squad in jeopardy.

Ter Stegen joined Girona on loan from Barcelona in January in order to play regular football until the end of the season. Without that, the German national team have warned him, he will most likely be second choice, or possibly not even on the plane to North America in the summer.

But a hamstring injury means the goalkeeper is likely to be sidelined for more than two months, according to sources in Girona.

It’s worth going through the timeline of his injuries.
