Midfielder not expected to return until late February at the earliest, ruling him out for majority of the season and possibly the World Cup
Barcelona have confirmed that midfielder Gavi will be sidelined for up to five months after undergoing surgery on a meniscus injury in his right knee.
The 21-year-old Spain international has not played since August, when he featured from the bench in Barcelona’s opening two league matches but was then left out of the squad against Rayo Vallecano after experiencing some discomfort in his knee.
The club had initially hoped to manage his knee problem without an operation. They have been managing him carefully after he missed almost a full year in the 2023-24 season following surgery on a torn cruciate ligament.
On Monday, however, Barcelona announced he would undergo surgery, specifically an arthroscopy, “in order to guarantee the best possible recovery and return to competitive action”.
The Spaniard proceeded to surgery on Tuesday and the club have now confirmed that the recovery process will last four to five months.
It is a huge blow for the midfielder after he had hoped to make a full return this season, following his recovery from the tear in the same knee he suffered between 2023 and 2024.
Gavi is not expected to return until late February at the earliest, ruling him out of the majority of Barcelona’s 2025-26 campaign and possibly the 2026 World Cup.
