Barcelona defender Eric Garcia has signed a five-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2031.

The agreement, which the club confirmed on Friday, is the latest step in their push to retain important figures in Hansi Flick’s squad. It follows deals signed by Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Jules Kounde and Frenkie de Jong over the past few months.

In a statement, Barcelona said the renewal “is a show of faith in a player who was raised at La Masia and has set a wonderful example for youth players”, before adding that his “performances, maturity and commitment” were decisive in extending his stay.

Garcia spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Girona, where he helped them qualify for the Champions League for the first time, and returned in the summer of 2024 without any guarantees over his role under Flick.

However, he has now become one of the prominent players in the squad, having featured in every La Liga match this season and played the most minutes of any Barcelona outfielder.

“We saw his potential from the start of last season,” manager Hansi Flick said. “He suffered injuries, but he’s a professional player and has always focused on playing football.

“When you want to be a leader, that’s also important. He’s disciplined and looks after the other players. It doesn’t matter if he plays at full-back, centre-back, or comes off the bench.”
