New deal extends the Dutch midfielder’s stay until 2029

Frenkie de Jong has said he is eager to stay at Barcelona and win “as many titles as possible”, after the player signed a new contract keeping him at the club until 2029.

The Netherlands international’s previous deal was due to expire next summer, and although rumours had circulated about a possible free transfer exit, both the player and club were always confident a renewal would be reached.

“As I’ve always said, I’ve always dreamed of playing for Barça,” said De Jong. “Now that I’m living that dream, I want to follow it for many more years and get more titles.

“I’ve always wanted to be at Barça, now that I am, I want to continue as much as possible.

“I feel very good in the club, in the city, with the colleagues, with the board of directors, I want to be here much longer.”

De Jong’s new agreement includes a €500m release clause, an increase from the previous €400m figure, showing indeed that the player is committed, and the club are eager to keep their key midfielder.

De Jong and Pedri have formed the basic core of Hansi Flick’s midfield, playing in a double pivot in the German’s 4-2-3-1. De Jong said he was working to get better “in all aspects of the game” and praised Barcelona’s young squad.

“I keep working as I have always done and see if I can improve more,” said one of Barcelona’s captains.

“I signed for the club I dreamed of as a child and now I hope to be here for ten years and be able to win the Champions League and as many titles as possible.

“Right now I’m excited about the sports project with such good and so young players.”
