La Liga champions unable to host a first-round game in their provisional home ground at Montjuic due to a concert

Barcelona are seeking Uefa’s permission to play their first Champions League match this season away from home amid stadium issues.

The club’s traditional home ground Camp Nou is still not ready to host matches, with a €1.5bn renovation that started in June 2023 still ongoing.

Barcelona had initially planned to start the new season there, albeit with a reduced capacity, but construction has not progressed quickly enough.

La Liga has already allowed Barcelona to start the campaign with three consecutive away games, but Uefa rules prevent clubs from moving fixtures.

However, it is possible for an exception to be made in Barcelona’s extraordinary circumstances.

The club have secured an alternative venue for home games till February, which is the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys at Monjuic, the same stadium where they have been playing home games since 2023.

However, the stadium at Montjuic cannot host a match in the first round of the Champions League, set between 16-18 September, because of a concert taking place at the same weekend.

The next Champions League round will take place between 30 September-1 October, by which time Montjuic would be available.
