German’s prolonged injury absence would also allow the club to free up space on their wage bill and register Joan Garcia

Barcelona are set to receive over €2m in compensation from FIFA following Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s extended injury absence.

The German goalkeeper has been sidelined with persistent back issues since returning from international duty in June and is now weighing up the option of surgery. Should he opt for the procedure, Ter Stegen could be out for as long as four months.

According to FIFA’s Club Protection Programme, clubs are entitled to daily payments for players injured during international duty provided the absence exceeds 28 consecutive days.

In Ter Stegen’s case, that would amount to €20,548 per day, potentially totalling more than €2m depending on the final length of his absence. The maximum payout under the scheme is €7.5m per player per injury.

In addition to the FIFA payout, Ter Stegen’s prolonged injury absence would allow the club to access up to 80% of his wages under La Liga’s salary relief mechanism. This would free up space on the wage bill to finally register Joan Garcia, whom they signed from Espanyol in June but have been unable to register due to La Liga’s 1:1 rule.
