Barcelona 5-2 Sevilla: Raphinha 9 pen, 21 pen, 51, Olmo 38, Cancelo 60; Oso 45+3, Sow 90+2

Last time out in Seville Barcelona were humiliated 4-1, a game that seemed to brought all of the team’s problems under Hansi Flick harshly to light. Here in the reverse fixture at the Camp Nou, Barcelona exacted sweet revenge, led by Raphinha, who converted two first-half penalties before completing a hat-trick in the second half.

The hosts were gifted a dream start after just seven minutes. Joao Cancelo, a constant thorn in Sevilla’s side, was brought down in the box by Djibril Sow, even if it was a rather soft one. Raphinha stepped up with a Panenka and the Catalans were ahead.

The Brazilian was given another opportunity from 12 yards just before the midway point in the half. Once again, Cancelo was the architect, his sharp movement causing Jose Angel Carmona to handle the ball as he slipped. This time, Raphinha sent the ball into the bottom corner, goalkeeper Odiesseas Vlachodimos trying and failing to reach it.

Sevilla had been the architects of their own misery in the first place and Barcelona gladly twisted the knife. Dani Olmo made it three just before the interval. Marc Bernal was sent scampering down the left, and his low delivery found Olmo in space, who swept a first-time effort into the net.

But in first-half stoppage time there was a response from the visitors, Oso meeting a superb cross with a cushioned volley to give his side a lifeline.

The second half was critical. An early goal and Sevilla might have been back in it. On 51 minutes, Raphinha extended Barcelona’s lead. Fermin Lopez found space before laying the ball off to Raphinha. The captain’s shot took a massive deflection off Nemanja Gudelj and flew over the goalkeeper.

Cancelo soon had his goal and it was emblematic of his entire performance here. Picking up the ball on the halfway line, the former Manchester City man surged forward unrestrained, into the box, before drilling a low shot through the legs of Vlachodimos and in.

Sevilla had further consolation when Sow beautifully turned in with a well-timed header. It could not lift his side’s spirits and he did not celebrate.
