President Joan Laporta has addressed the players and staf explaining the importance of the game
Barcelona are close to agreeing a lucrative friendly to be played in Peru this December.
The club is counting on the friendly to offset the financial blow of their cancelled match in the United States against Villarreal, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The Catalan club had been set to face the Yellow Submarine at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on 20 December, in what was billed as a landmark game for La Liga’s global expansion ideas.
However, event promoters Relevent Sports and La Liga pulled the plug earlier this month, citing “uncertainty in Spain”.
Barcelona later described the cancellation as a “missed commercial opportunity”. It has reportedly also left a sizeable gap in their projected revenue for the final quarter of 2025.
To plug that hole, the Catalan club are now in advanced talks to play a mid-season friendly in Peru, which could bring in between €7-8m.
The match would take place after the club’s final La Liga game of the year and before the Christmas break, pending approval from the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) to ensure it doesn’t breach holiday period agreements.
Sources close to the club said president Joan Laporta has addressed the players and staff at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, explaining the financial importance of the Peru offer.
With commercial income below expectations this season, Laporta reportedly urged the squad to understand the bigger picture given the state of their finances. At the start of the season, Barcelona were unable to register their summer signings until the eve of their opening fixture due to financial troubles.
