Barcelona are making considerable progress towards signing Marcus Rashford permanently from Manchester United in the summer.

Rashford wants to remain at Camp Nou for the long term, and certainly beyond the end of his loan deal in June. Barcelona have also been impressed enough with the England international to decide on a permanent deal, and there is optimism that a deal can be done despite obstacles stemming from the club’s finances.

Conversations were held this week between Rashford’s representatives and club sporting director Deco, according to the Athletic. They are understood to have been positive, which suggests that a summer deal remains achievable.

However, negotiations are still verbal at this stage. For one thing, Barcelona do not yet have a president, with elections still to come in March. For another, the club still have ongoing salary-cap restrictions imposed by La Liga, which will influence any future agreement for Rashford.

As in recent transfer windows, there will have to be a lot of financial manoeuvring in the summer, as previously reported by Fulltime Herald.

Barcelona’s loan deal with Manchester United last summer included an agreement to sign Rashford with a €30m fee spread across three years. This will help Barcelona significantly as it allows their spending to remain within imposed limits.

Contract length is also another sticking point. Rashford turns 30 in October 2027, and Barcelona’s current recruitment policy does not support long-term deals for players approaching that stage of their careers. A contract could well involve multiple years but Barcelona may be unlikely to offer him a contract longer than two or three years.
