Barcelona 3-0 Levante: Bernal 4, De Jong 32, Lopez 81

An opening goal from Marc Bernal got Barcelona cruising and the Catalans did not look back. A comprehensive 3-0 victory over relegation-threated Levante took Hansi Flick’s side back to the top of La Liga, after Real Madrid had fluffed their lines against Osasuna on Saturday.

Frenkie de Jong and substitute Fermin Lopez were the other scorers as Barcelona bounced back at Camp Nou after suffering two defeats in a row last week.

A humiliating 4-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in midweek left Barcelona all but out of the Copa del Rey, before a loss at Girona forced them to concede a top spot they have held since the run up to Christmas last year.

But a confident performance at home on Sunday saw last season’s champions move to 61 points from 25 games, edging ahead of Madrid.

Barcelona were rarely troubled by a Levante side in 19th place and all but doomed to play in the second division next season. The home side went ahead after Joao Cancelo found Eric Garcia on the left and the latter crossed low for Bernal to put past goalkeeper Matthew Ryan.

Robert Lewandowski wasted a clear chance after he struck his shot into the turf and it bounced over the bar when he had only the goalkeeper to beat, and Cancelo’s cross pinged the post when he was searching for the Poland striker. But De Jong made it 2-0 anyway after the half hour, running through to turn in the impressive Cancelo’s cross from the left.

The second half was quieter but Barcelona also missed chances before Lopez came off the bench to blast a shot beyond Ryan and end the tie.
