Lopez to miss three weeks while Gavi could be out for up to five

Barcelona have been dealt a double injury blow as the club confirmed that Gavi and Fermin Lopez will be out for several weeks.

The club announced on Monday that Gavi will undergo surgery on his right knee, while Lopez is expected to be unavailable for up to three weeks after sustaining a muscle injury in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Getafe.

Gavi only returned to competitive action in August and featured from the bench in Barcelona’s opening two league matches. He was then left out of the squad against Rayo Vallecano after experiencing some discomfort in his knee.

Club staff had been managing him carefully after he missed almost a full year in 2023-24 following surgery on a torn cruciate ligament.

Earlier this month it was confirmed that he was being assessed and awaiting clarity on whether he would need surgery.

In a statement, Barcelona said the midfielder would proceed to surgery “in order to guarantee the best possible recovery and return to competitive action”.

No timeline for his return was given, with the club saying they would make further announcements after the procedure. However, sources close to the situation suggest he could be out for five weeks.
