Club could decide to terminate the contract of veteran Wojciech Szczesny
Barcelona are preparing for changes in their goalkeeping department ahead of the summer transfer window, with Joan Garcia set to remain the club’s first-choice option.
There is still uncertainty surrounding Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is expected to return from his loan spell at Girona, while the future of Wojciech Szczesny is also under review.
According to reports, Barcelona have a clause in Szczęsny’s contract that would allow them to terminate his deal this summer by paying around €2m in compensation. The 35-year-old joined the club on an emergency basis following Ter Stegen’s injury in September 2024. He signed a contract extension last year, keeping him at the club until 2027.
But Szczesny is well regarded within the squad and coaching staff for both his performances and leadership, and he has considerable influence in the dressing room. So any decision to let go of him must be handled carefully by club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco.
Szczęsny has made 10 appearances in all competitions this season, recording one clean sheet and conceding 17 goals while deputising for Garcia during injury spells.
