Winning the league title, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup in his first season, Flick has joined an elite group of Barcelona coaches that includes Louis van Gaal, Pep Guardiola, Ernesto Valverde and Luis Enrique
Barcelona have confirmed that head coach Hansi Flick has extended his contract by an additional year, keeping him at the club until June 2027. The decision follows a highly successful first season in charge for the German tactician.
The official announcement was made on Wednesday evening, with the club releasing a glowing statement that read: “Hansi Flick has made Barca fans happy in his first season for many reasons: for the belief he has given to the team, for the epic comebacks, and for the trophies. The excitement that the German has brought to the club in his first year in charge has made FC Barcelona a feared rival once again in Europe.”
Flick’s appointment last summer came at a turbulent time for Barcelona. Following a disappointing 2023/24 campaign under Xavi, the club parted ways with the former midfielder. The move, while controversial, then opened the door for the employment of Flick, who had been out of work since leaving the German national team, but was still remembered fondly for his highly impressive stint at Bayern Munich.
Initially handed a two-year contract which was set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season, Flick has now agreed to stay on for another year. Interestingly, the club had reportedly pushed for a longer-term deal, but Flick “wants to go year by year”, according to Barcelona president Joan Laporta.
His impact on the club has been remarkable. In 59 matches across all competitions, Flick has led La Blaugrana to 43 wins, boasting a 73% win rate, second only to Luis Enrique’s record-breaking debut season when the club secured a treble in 2014/15.
Flick was disappointed on the European front with a Champions League semi-final exit to Inter Milan, but has had incredible domestic success. He guided the team to a league and Copa del Rey double, along with the Spanish Super Cup. The achievement has been accomplished by only a select few managers in their debut season: Louis van Gaal, Pep Guardiola, Ernesto Valverde and Luis Enrique.
“Hansi Flick is creating history at FC Barcelona and that, we are sure, will continue in the coming seasons,” the club have said.
