Teenager was hailed as the next big talent to make the first team from La Masia, but surprisingly expressed a desire to leave the club

Barcelona teenager Dro Fernandez has joined Paris Saint-Germain after the French club reached an agreement to pay just a little over his €6m release clause for his services.

PSG did not trigger the clause reportedly due to complexities involved, but instead negotiated a separate €8m fee. The 18-year-old has signed a four-year contract at the club.

“I’m very happy and very proud to be joining Paris Saint-Germain,” Fernandez said at his presentation in Paris. “This is a moment of huge pride for me and for my family. I’m hugely excited and motivated to play and to give everything for this shirt.”

Fernandez is highly rated and in fact was hailed as the next big talent, after Lamine Yamal, to make the first team from La Masia, but he surprisingly told Barcelona this month that he wanted to leave the club.

The 18-year-old made his debut in September, when he was 17. He made five first-team appearances but started only once in La Liga and once in the Champions League.

Fernandez is apparently leaving because he wants more playing time and believes he can get that at PSG, with Barcelona already boasting the services of Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, Marcus Rashford and Roony Bardghji.

However, it has also emerged that a personal relationship with Luis Enrique was a key factor, with last season’s treble-winning coach reportedly having a private conversation with Fernandez to explain the project in France.

Enrique and Fernandez share the same agent and the 55-year-old coach regularly visits Barcelona.

Barcelona was rocked when the teenager first made clear his decision to leave, with the news ultimately prompting a reaction from Hansi Flick in the media, the coach giving a speech about wanting only players who were fully committed to the club.
