Failure to register players in time would mean they cannot play until January

Barcelona executives have committed their personal wealth to secure an emergency financial guarantee in an attempt to register summer signings before the start of their La Liga title defence this weekend.

With just three days until Saturday’s opener, new arrivals including first-choice goalkeeper Joan Garcia, Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford, returning goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and defender Gerard Martin remain unregistered.

La Liga rules prevent Barcelona from registering additional players if their wage bill exceeds the limits set by the league. The limits are set based on club revenue and Barcelona have been unable to increase that either, which would have provided them with additional room.

At a meeting on Wednesday, board members agreed to underwrite a €7m bank guarantee, putting their own personal assets at risk. The same measure was taken in 2023 for a similar amount before they could register players.

Barcelona still expect all signings to be eligible before the transfer window closes, but failure to register them in time would mean they cannot play until January.

Barcelona are also awaiting confirmation from La Liga on whether Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury will allow them to register Garcia under the league’s injury replacement rule.
