The Catalan club are keen on entrenching their success, as club president says Flick is content to take things “year by year”
Fresh off a clean sweep of domestic trophies, Barcelona have moved swiftly to lock down the man behind it. Manager Hansi Flick has agreed to a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the helm through the summer of 2027, club president Joan Laporta confirmed Friday.
The announcement, expected to be made official in the coming days, comes as no surprise following the German’s wildly successful first season in charge. Flick led the Catalan giants to a La Liga title with two matches to spare, along with victories in the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. Barcelona also reached the Champions League semi-finals, and while they were disappointed to fall short of reaching the final, it is their deepest run in the competition since 2019.
“A large percentage of the success is down to him,” Laporta said of Flick. “He’s so excited by the project we have here.”
On the topic of Flick’s future at the club Laporta said: “A few months ago there was a loose agreement. He will stay. [Sporting director] Deco is putting it together and it will be announced soon. He wants to go year by year.”
Flick initially signed a two-year deal when he took over last summer, but both parties have apparently been in talks for months to secure an extension. Sources close to the club indicated that despite interest from other top European sides, Flick had no intention of leaving the Barcelona project at the moment as he believes in it deeply.
Some fans may well have hoped for a longer commitment from the German given his success, but the club are comfortable with the one-year extension. Given their financial challenges, Barcelona are cautious about offering lengthy contracts.
In recent months, Barcelona have also secured long-term futures for key players including Pedri, Gavi and emerging star Pau Cubarsi. Sporting director Deco is expected to continue negotiations with several other senior squad members such as Jules Kounde and Raphinha in the coming weeks.
