Club officials believe Barcelona are targeting Nico Williams while in violation of La Liga financial rules

Athletic Club are preparing to take formal action against Barcelona as the Catalan giants continue their push to sign Spain winger Nico Williams this summer.

Athletic president Jon Uriarte and general manager Jon Berasategi have travelled to La Liga headquarters in Madrid to request a full financial audit of Barcelona, according to Cadena SER. The Basque club argue that Barcelona have not met the league’s strict financial regulations, specifically the 1:1 rule, which requires clubs to spend only what they generate in revenue.

The move comes amid growing frustration at San Mames, where club officials believe Barcelona’s efforts to trigger Williams’ €60 million release clause are in violation of La Liga rules. The winger signed a contract extension with Athletic in December that runs until 2027, but has now informed the club of his desire to move to Barcelona.

Despite Williams’ intentions, sources close to Athletic told Radio Bilbao that no agreement has been reached between the player and Barcelona. Athletic insist they have every intention of keeping the 22-year-old, and are determined to block any transfer unless La Liga confirms that the Blaugrana can afford the deal within current spending limits.

Williams is considered one of the brightest talents in Spanish football. He has made 167 appearances for Athletic and contributed 31 goals and 30 assists. The Spain international’s performances for both club and country have made him a priority target for new Barcelona coach Hansi Flick.

Barcelona are expected to try to activate the player’s release clause at the start of the new financial year next week, banking on some good accounting work. However, Athletic’s legal challenge could complicate those plans.
