Atalanta secured a needed 2-1 victory over AS Roma at the Gewiss Stadium, a result that not only guaranteed their return to the UEFA Champions League but also ended Roma’s impressive 19-match unbeaten streak in Serie A.
This win solidified Atalanta’s third-place position in the league standings with 71 points, placing them seven points ahead of both Juventus and Lazio, with only two matches remaining in the season.
The match commenced with high intensity, and it was Ademola Lookman who opened the scoring for Atalanta in the ninth minute. Charles De Ketelaere showcased his dribbling prowess by navigating through Roma’s defence and delivering a precise low cross into the box. Lookman controlled the ball calmly and slotted it past Roma’s goalkeeper, Mile Svilar, marking Atalanta’s 100th goal across all competitions this season.
Roma responded with determination, and their efforts were rewarded in the 32nd minute when Bryan Cristante equalized with a deft flicked header, capitalizing on a well-placed cross. The first half concluded with both teams level, reflecting the evenly matched nature of the contest.
The second half saw a shift in momentum. Roma believed they had a chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty after a clash between Mario Pasalic and Manu Kone. However, after consulting the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the referee overturned the decision, much to the relief of the home fans.
Atalanta continued to press forward, and their persistence paid off in the 76th minute. Substitute Ibrahim Sulemana, who had joined Atalanta in July 2024, made an immediate impact by scoring his first goal for the club. He unleashed a low strike from just outside the area, which found the back of the net after a VAR check confirmed no offside in the buildup.
This victory was significant for several reasons. It marked Atalanta’s fifth qualification for the Champions League since 2019, underscoring the club’s consistent performance at the highest level of European football. Additionally, the win ended Roma’s long-standing unbeaten run in the league, a streak that had been intact since mid-December.
Ademola Lookman’s goal also signified a personal milestone marking the first time he has reached 20 goal contributions in his career, as he continues to be a vital contributor to Atalanta’s attacking prowess. His consistent performances have been instrumental in the team’s success this season.
With two matches remaining against Genoa and Parma, Atalanta can approach the end of the season with confidence, having already secured their place in Europe’s elite competition. For Roma, the defeat is a setback in their quest for Champions League qualification, and they will need to regroup quickly as they prepare to face AC Milan and Torino in their final fixtures.
