Atalanta contests Ademola Lookman’s claim of ‘broken promises,’ stating they agreed to sell him to a foreign club, not Serie A rivals Inter.
Atalanta and Ademola Lookman are locked in a heated transfer dispute, with the player accusing the club of “broken promises” and “poor treatment.”
Lookman submitted a formal transfer request, citing the club’s refusal to let him join Inter Milan despite a suitable offer. However, Atalanta disputes Lookman’s version of events, claiming they only agreed to sell him to a foreign club, not Serie A rivals Inter.
According to Atalanta, the promise to let Lookman leave was made last summer when he asked to be left out of the squad for the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid due to interest from Paris Saint-Germain. The club claims the agreement was to let him go to a foreign club with an ambitious and lucrative bid, which would have made a transfer to Arsenal, Chelsea, or Paris Saint-Germain more feasible.
The current situation has reached a breaking point, with Lookman pushing to join Inter Milan. Atalanta has rejected Inter’s offer of €42m plus €3m in bonuses, demanding a total of €50m for the player’s release. Lookman believes Atalanta has failed to keep their promise, blocking his transfer to Inter for unclear reasons.
The Nigerian international expressed his frustration on social media, stating that he had previously remained loyal to Atalanta despite interest from other clubs. However, with the current situation, Lookman feels he has no choice but to speak out and request a transfer.
Atalanta’s stance on the matter suggests they are unwilling to sell Lookman to a direct competitor in Serie A.
The club’s demand for €50m indicates they value Lookman highly and are not willing to let him go cheaply. Inter Milan, on the other hand, remains committed to signing Lookman, with their president, Giuseppe Marotta, expressing optimism about reaching an agreement.
As the transfer saga continues, Lookman’s future remains uncertain. The player’s determination to join Inter and the club’s refusal to back down will likely prolong the negotiations. With Atalanta’s upcoming fixtures, including a match against Pisa SC on August 24, the situation may become more pressing for both parties.
