The result marked their sixth win during that stretch and lifted them into sixth place, while Lazio’s struggles at home continued as they have just one win in their last seven league outings.
Atalanta nearly found it after 15 minutes when Bernasconi beat Provedel to a ball over the top and squared for Nikola Krstovic, but Provstgaard managed to divert the striker’s effort over the bar from the goal line.
That early scare sparked Lazio into action. Their first meaningful chance came soon after, as Kenneth Taylor attempted an acrobatic effort that was comfortably saved by Carnesecchi. Taylor threatened again before the half-hour mark when Daniel Maldini, facing his parent club, laid the ball off to him inside the box, only for his strike to rebound off the post.
The breakthrough eventually arrived just before half-time in controversial fashion. Zappacosta’s cross struck the arm of Cataldi, and after a lengthy VAR review, Atalanta were awarded a penalty. Ederson stepped up and calmly sent Provedel the wrong way to score his first league goal of the season.
Early in the second half, Lazio thought they had a chance to respond when Zappacosta was penalised for handball while challenging Nuno Tavares. However, following another extended review, the decision was overturned due to Tavares being offside in the build-up, much to the hosts’ frustration.
Carnesecchi then preserved Atalanta’s advantage with a sharp save to tip away Noslin’s glancing header. Just before the hour mark, the visitors doubled their lead as Zalewski received the ball on the turn and curled a superb 20-yard effort around Provedel into the bottom corner.
Maurizio Sarri’s side had taken just one point all season from matches in which they conceded first, and a comeback never materialised. Maldini fired over, a free-kick was beaten away by Carnesecchi, and Petar Ratkov’s late header struck the post.
The result sealed another commanding away display for Atalanta, who have now lost only once in their last nine trips to face Lazio.
