Aston Villa 3-2 Salzburg: Home side finish second and maintain momentum but Ollie Watkins injured

A late goal by teenager Jamaldeen Jimoh sealed a superb comeback victory for Aston Villa against RB Salzburg in the Europa League on Thursday.

Villa had already qualified for the last 16 heading into the tie at Villa Park, allowing Unai Emery to rest most of his first-team players ahead of the weekend’s Premier League game against Brentford.

But it looked like they would pay the price with a home defeat after Salzburg dominated the opening stages and went 2-0 up through goals from Karim Konate and Moussa Yeo. An injury to striker Ollie Watkins compounded Emery’s misery, with Morgan Rogers summoned off the bench to replace him.

But Villa began their comeback after Rogers pulled one back on minute 64 and Tyrone Mings levelled the score 12 minutes later, meeting Matty Cash’s cross with a header.

But the headlines belonged to the 19-year-old Jimoh who, on his European debut, converted Kadan Young’s low cross to deliver the win.
