Aston Villa have rejected Tottenham Hotspur’s request to move their upcoming Premier League game in May. Spurs had hoped to bring the match forward to help their chances of European success, but Villa were not willing to agree.
Tottenham are currently in the Europa League semi-finals and could reach the final, which will take place in Bilbao on 21 May. Their game against Villa at Villa Park is scheduled for Sunday, 18 May — just three days before the potential final — and Spurs had asked if it could be played earlier, specifically on Thursday, 15 May.
In a statement released on Sunday, Tottenham said:
“We should like to inform supporters that we are in discussions with the Premier League regarding a change in date to our away Premier League match against Aston Villa, currently scheduled for Sunday, 18 May.”
However, there are reports that Aston Villa have turned down the request. Sources close to the situation explained that there is no precedent for the Premier League to shift fixtures just to assist teams still competing in Europe.
Villa’s stance is also influenced by their busy schedule. Unai Emery’s side have been playing matches every three to four days throughout April due to their involvement in both the Champions League and the FA Cup.
Another factor in the decision is that Villa’s match against Spurs is their final home game of the season. The club had already organised several family and fan engagement activities around the date, which would not be possible if the match was moved to an evening slot.
Spurs focus on European dream
Tottenham are preparing for a crucial Europa League semi-final against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, with the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this week. On the other side of the draw, Manchester United will take on Spain’s Athletic Club.
With a European final within reach, Spurs had been hoping for some help with their domestic schedule. Instead, they will now have to juggle a packed calendar and hope they can handle the pressure across both competitions.
