Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal are on track to win the Premier League for the first time in 22 years after their 4-1 rout of Aston Villa.
Arteta’s side dominated the second half, with Gabriel Magalhaes, Martin Zubimendi, Leandro Trossard, and Gabriel Jesus all getting on the scoresheet. This victory ends Villa’s club-record equalling 11-match winning run and puts Arsenal five points clear of second-placed Manchester City.
“We know what we want. We will have to work really hard for it every single day, but I think we are on the right track for it,” Arteta said. The Spaniard praised his team’s performance, highlighting their efficiency and quality in front of goal.
Arsenal’s victory was a statement of intent in the title race, and Arteta believes they have the power to go all the way. “The way we started the second half was amazing. We really turned things up and were efficient in everything that we did,” he added.
Arteta also praised Brazil defender Gabriel’s influence on his first start since being injured in November, saying he was “tremendous” against Ollie Watkins. The Gunners boss played down the incident where he didn’t shake hands with Aston Villa’s Unai Emery, saying it’s “not an issue.”
Arsenal’s next challenge is Manchester City, who are five points behind and have a game in hand.
