Mikel Arteta remains confident in Arsenal’s title charge as the Gunners prepare for a difficult Premier League clash against an in-form Sunderland side.
Mikel Arteta has reiterated his belief that Arsenal are ready to go all the way in the Premier League this season, insisting the foundations for a title push were laid long before the campaign kicked off. With the Gunners sitting six points clear at the top, Saturday’s clash against Sunderland offers a chance to further strengthen their grip on the race.
After finishing second for three consecutive seasons, Arteta revealed that the squad entered the year with a clear sense of purpose and belief. The Arsenal manager stressed that the group has stayed tightly knit, focusing on consistency and mentality rather than external pressure as they chase a first league title since the famous 2003–04 Invincibles season.
Arteta pointed to the squad’s togetherness and daily standards as key reasons behind their current position. Rather than drawing comparisons with past Arsenal teams, he praised the present group for its hunger and professionalism, suggesting their mindset has been as important as tactical improvements or individual brilliance.
Standing in Arsenal’s way is a Sunderland side enjoying an impressive return to the top flight. Promoted last season, Regis Le Bris’ team currently sit eighth and have already proven they can trouble elite opposition, taking points off Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool earlier in the campaign.
Arteta was quick to highlight Sunderland’s strengths, describing them as well-organised, fearless, and tactically disciplined. He acknowledged their strong home form and clear playing identity, warning that Arsenal will need to be sharp and fully committed to overcome a side that thrives on intensity and structure.
On the injury front, Arsenal continue to manage several key absences. Bukayo Saka is edging closer to a return but remains unavailable, while captain Martin Ødegaard is still sidelined with a minor issue. There was some positive news, however, as defender Jurrien Timber has been declared fit and ready for selection.
Midfielder Mikel Merino’s long-term absence remains a significant setback after the Spaniard underwent surgery on a fractured foot. Arteta described the injury as a major loss, noting Merino’s versatility and goal threat, but emphasised the importance of keeping him involved around the squad as Arsenal push through the decisive phase of the season.
