The Premier League always and today, it did again as Arsenal were stunned by Manchester United in a 3-2 loss.
Arsenal fans will be holding their heads in disbelief after their loss to Manchester United at the Emirates.
Manchester City and Aston Villa won their weekend games, cutting the gap between themselves and Premier League leaders Arsenal to 4 points. Arsenal needed a win badly to extend their lead and avoid the pressure that has seen them bottle the Premier League.
But when they needed to stand up the most, they were lacklustre.
The Gunners pressed the Red Devils, showing why they have dominated the Premier League for most of the season and in 29 minutes after a slow opening exchange, the Gunners took the lead through a Lisandro Martinez own goal.
But that lead lasted only eight minutes as Mbuemo was gifted a glorious chance by Zubimendi and the in-form Cameroonian did what he does best, he sat Raya down and tapped into an empty net.
As the second half started, Arsenal’s energy had visibly dropped and Manchester United took full advantage of that as they took the lead in the 50th minute.
Arsenal tried to regroup, with Arteta making four changes on the fly. It was clear that the Arsenal manager was rattled. His substitutions did pay off as Mikel Merino found the back of the net in the 84th minute from a corner. But just when Arsenal thought they had rescued a point, Manchester United turned a raucous Emirates stadium into a silent-opera room as Cunha pounced on a loose pass and struck a daggering shot into the bottom corner of Raya’s goal.
It felt like a blur, Arsenal were stunned and dumbfounded. The impossible was suddenly possible. Arsenal, who hadn’t conceded 3 goals in a game in their last 80 games were 3-2 down to a resurgent Manchester United.
The ref added seven minutes to the regulation time but it wasn’t enough to bring Manchester United down from the seventh-heaven they were in. The final whistle may have ended Arsenal’s misery on the night but it has opened a floodgates of drama in the Premier League title race.
