“We have 36 points left to play for, and our goal is to get all 36,” manager boasts

Alvaro Arbeloa has vowed that Real Madrid will continue fighting after falling four points behind Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a defeat to Getafe on Monday.

Martin Satriano’s first-half volley was enough for the 11th best team in the league to best Madrid, who toiled away for much of the game and struggled to create clear chances, at times looking too disjointed and disconnected.

“There are 36 points left to play for and we have no other objective than to fight to get all 36 points,” Arbeloa insisted. “Nobody here is going to throw in the towel.

“This is Real Madrid and nobody gives up until the last match. Obviously, four points is a gap that we think we can close and that’s what we’re going to fight and work towards, starting with the next match in Vigo.”

Madrid wasted a clear chance when Vinicius Junior broke through on goal in the first half but failed to capitalise. After Satriano’s effort, Getafe defended well for the rest of the game, but helped greatly by Madrid’s lack of inspiration. Arbeloa tried to sound upbeat.

“Obviously, it’s a game where we can do things better, but it’s also a game where we competed and had significantly more clear chances than they did,” said Madrid’s coach.

“We tried to score from the first minute. Vinicius had a very clear chance in the first half. In the second, Rudiger and Rodrygo had opportunities. We had several chances and I think we deserved to score, but football isn’t about deserving.

“Getafe did a great job, as they always do. We knew the kind of game we were going to face. Nothing happened that we didn’t expect.”

Madrid will face Celta Vigo on Friday, and the team sixth in the league will certainly bring a much tougher challenge than Getafe did.

“We have 36 points left to play for, and our goal is to get all 36,” Arbeloa claimed regardless. “I know that after a defeat like the one we had today, things look very bleak, and there isn’t much hope when you lose like that, but that has to be our objective.

“We have a very difficult match in Vigo, and we have to go there and win it. Nobody here is throwing away the league title. Nobody’s throwing anything away. There are 36 points left, and we’re going for them.”
