Antony wanted “revenge” when he left the Premier League and moved to Real Betis on loan in January, manager Manuel Pellegrini has revealed. It comes as Betis prepare to face Premier League side Chelsea in the Conference League final on Wednesday.

The Brazilian has been superb for Betis since his January move, contributing nine goals and five assists in 25 appearances, including a standout performance in the semi-final against Fiorentina, where he scored and provided an assist in a 2-2 draw that secured a 4-3 aggregate victory for Betis.

Reflecting on Antony’s resurgence at the club, Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini said: “I think that Antony did all that he could to do [in England]. I spoke with him before he came to Betis. He told me that he was not playing because he was not happy. Also, he wanted revenge.

“We know he can do it, but it is not easy when you pay €100 million for a player. Antony is a great player, and it was a good time in Betis, improving in his career.”

Antony’s performance could be crucial in landing a historic first European trophy for the Spanish side as they go up against a formidable Chelsea side in the final at Wroclaw Stadium.

Chelsea, under manager Enzo Maresca, have been dominant throughout the tournament and are aiming to complete a unique set of European trophies: the Champions League, Europa League and now the Conference League.
